These photos show the final product of the mural the students and teachers painted at my primary school in Burkina Faso in January 2012. The mural followed activities I led with the teachers to teach the students about HIV/AIDS transmission, prevention and stigma.

It’s Global Handwashing Day!
Handwashing with soap has an important role to play in child survival and health. One of the most cost-effective interventions, simply handwashing with soap can reduce the incidence of diarrhea among children under five by almost 50 percent, and respiratory infections by nearly 25 percent!

In September 2011, Health PCV Emily Engel from Anchorage, AL worked with her counterparts Haoua Ouédraogo and Mamouna Zida to promote neem cream production. The group created a full day workshop to reach all of the satellite villages in their health jurisdiction. During the workshop 55 women from surrounding villages learned about the basics of malaria, the business of selling neem cream and how to make the locally produced mosquito repellant.
Women in Kalsaka formed a group to produce neem cream after the workshop. They sell neem cream in small bags for 150 cfa and 200 cfa. The group is also working to produce liquid soap and hard soap as well as encouraging the women to have their own small businesses. Burkina is the second largest producer of Shea Butter in the world, so this major ingredient in neem cream is easily found in most small villages. The project is an inexpensive and popular among volunteers and communities in Burkina Faso.
Every International Women’s Day, the ladies of Burkina celebrate by participating in dances, sports and other festivities. Here, my friends from village make their way to our closest city for the March 8, 2009 activities. Each year, the country produces a new fabric design to celebrate the day and women rush to the textile retailers and tailors to have outfits made in time for the holiday.

This photo was taken in Karfigula, Burkina Faso during a camp for young girls. The camp used soccer as a tool to educate girls on HIV/AIDS. The photo shows Peace Corps Volunteer Brandon Perkins, and Burkinabe counterpart leading a group of young girls in some stretching exercises before an educational match.
