I took this photo during an HIV/AIDS awareness camp held in Ukraine. The three students seen here, from the 8th form, created the poster as a project to show what they learned. The poster says “We Stop AIDS Together” in Ukrainian. - Peace Corps Education Volunteer Kathryn Trescott

Many Volunteers will contribute to HIV/AIDS initiatives during their service, regardless of their area of expertise. For instance, Peace Corps Agriculture Volunteer Jared Tharp is working on an urban garden at a hospital in Senegal that helps feed the patients in the infectious diseases ward. He also tends to several smaller gardens that are used by the patients as part of their therapy and works with local families, many of whom who have been affected by HIV/AIDS, to develop their own sustainable food sources.

This photo was taken in Peru, on the eve of World AIDS Day, 2009. We received a small PEPFAR grant to run a year-long HIV prevention program, focused on training youth peer educators and educating the community about prevention through mass media. World AIDS Day was a flurry of activity, with our peer educators participating in educational fairs, talking to the media, and organizing community-wide parades.
However, on the eve of November 30th, we took a pause to hold a candle-light vigil in the central plaza of our community. Young and old all came together to hold up candles and sing in solidarity with those who have been affected by HIV and with hope for the next generation that they may grow-up HIV free. - Peace Corps Volunteer Sarah Walker
I wasn’t sure how my background in business could be useful in dealing with HIV and AIDS. But by teaching business skills to women impacted by the pandemic, they were empowered to create viable businesses that could sustain them and the people who depended on them.
