The new library will promote self-learning and literacy through access to books and computer programs, in addition to imparting management skills to the teachers and students that will run and maintain the library.”

This project will give all community members closer access to water, creates a committee that will take control and responsibility of the water system, and decreases the problems caused by unsanitary water. This is a beautiful community with wonderful, motivated people who are willing to contribute and sacrifice time and effort to have access to water.

Sixteen Peace Corps Volunteers in the Dominican Republic are producing and filming a telenovela (soap opera) entitled, “Me Toca a Mi” (It’s my turn) with more than 25 local youth that will be used in classrooms, educational centers, and youth clubs throughout the country. The telenovela is designed to teach life skills and HIV/AIDS prevention and awareness.

Barbara Jo White served as a Peace Corps Volunteer in the Dominican Republic from 1987 to 1989 where she started the Peace Corps World Map project. Today, world maps adorn the walls of classrooms, community centers and buildings in over 70 countries.
