Introduced to American audiences on seminal albums such as Paul Simon’s Graceland and Peter Gabriel’s So, N’Dour continues to influence virtually every realm of the international music scene, riding high on tumbling African rhythms and stratospheric vocals.
Celebrate Peace Corps’ 50th Anniversary with Youssou N’Dour at The John F. Kennedy Center for Performing Arts on Wednesday, September 21, 2011 at 6:00 p.m., in the Concert Hall at the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts.
Tickets are required. Reserved seating tickets, two per person, will be distributed on the day of the performance, beginning at 4 p.m. in the Hall of Nations.
50 years ago today, the first group of Peace Corps Volunteers arrived in Ghana to begin their service. Today, 69 more Americans were sworn in as Peace Corps Volunteers. The ceremony commemorated 50 years of friendship between Peace Corps and the communities of Ghana

Today marks the 50th Anniversary of President John F. Kennedy’s historic Rose Garden send-off to the first group of Volunteers to leave for service in Tanganyika (now Tanzania) and Ghana in Africa. We are happy to have this archival footage of his remarks.
Illustration major students in a University of Connecticut “Topics in Illustration” fall 2010 class created a poster series using a variety of media to capture what they felt was the essence of the Peace Corps in honor of our 50th anniversary. These prints are currently on display at Peace Corps HQ in Washington, D.C. and will become a travelling exhibition throughout the University of Connecticut’s regional campus libraries.

Sasha Cooper Morrison, a member of our Global Operations team and an RPCV from Paraguay, and Tom Balemesa, an Atlas Fellow from Uganda working for our Africa Region team, perform West African dancing that includes movements that are a combination of Guinean dances accompanied by Senegalese drums. They graciously offered their talents during a world dance party at Peace Corps HQ to help us celebrate our 50th Anniversary.
