Howard University alumna Christina Titus is a Peace Corps Community Economic Development Volunteer in Rwanda where she works alongside village-based community health workers to educate her community about malaria and HIV prevention, as well as address hygiene and nutrition. In an effort to engage youth in her community, Christina is also working on developing a youth center to empower them as they tackle health issues and bring about sustainable change.
Peace Corps Volunteers Introduce Alternative Fuel Source to Communities in Madagascar and Rwanda
Peace Corps Volunteers in Madagascar and Rwanda are working to reduce the impact of deforestation by introducing green charcoal into local communities. This environmentally safe method of charcoal production serves as a sustainable alternative to wood charcoal and can generate income for local families and organizations. Green charcoal bricks are created using a combination of biomass materials such as agricultural waste, leaves, grass and sawdust. The material is chopped up and soaked in water, and then pressed with a manual ram and cylinder into a pellet and left in the sun to dry.
As an education Volunteer in southwestern Uganda, I have the opportunity to work on various secondary projects with local primary schools. In one nearby school, I facilitated a drama club where children could have the opportunity to express themselves, develop self confidence, and develop relationships with others. We also worked to create dramas based on things in their lives that mattered to them. This photo was taken in July 2011, as the children were processing in for their end of term performance. They performed their dramas with great pride that day, and one can see this pride on their faces as they walk in from their school’s front gate.
