World Water Day: Did you know?

• 85% of the world population lives in the driest half of the planet

• 6 to 8 million people die annually from the consequences of disasters and water-related diseases

• About 66% of Africa is arid or semi-arid and more than 300 of the 800 million people in sub-Saharan Africa live in a water-scarce environment

• Water for irrigation and food production constitutes one of the greatest pressures on freshwater resources. Agriculture accounts for ~70% of global freshwater withdrawals (up to 90% in some fast-growing economies)

We just announced our Top Volunteer States! Did your state make the list? 

For the second consecutive year, the District of Columbia, Vermont and Oregon top the list of Volunteer-producing states per capita, with 8.1, 7.2 and 6.4 Volunteer

Today we announced the top states and cities where Peace Corps Volunteers call home in 2011. California, New York, and Texas topped the list, while the greatest number of Volunteers per capita came from the District of Columbia, Vermont, and Oregon. In 2011,For the second consecutive year, Missoula, Mont., topped the list of metro areas, followed by Ithaca, N.Y. and Fort Collins, Colo.

Currently, there are more than 9,000 volunteers serving in 75 countries around the world.
