apeaceofukraine:

I had my first snow day in Ukraine today! This morning I walked around Kozelets with my host sister Julia, her friend Liuda, her brother Valera, and a fellow volunteer Bobby. We went to the weekly bazaar, stopped at a few little spots around the town like the library and cultural building, and visited the cathedral. It was my first time being inside of the cathedral, and I was almost as awe-struck as I was the first time I saw the outside of it. There are ceiling high wood-carvings and paintings, all done by hand. The warmth inside is palpable (in a good way) and the air was heavy with the scent of candles and communion. The hymns being sung vibrated off of every surface. On the way home, we walked through the park, where I had my first snowball fight! Everything was beautifully covered in an untouched blanket of snow. The rest of the day was spent visiting Babucya and then relaxing at home, eating derunys (a potato pancake type dish), and watching movies. It is still snowing outside, but I feel anything but cold : )
