“As I neared the end of my service, my father came to visit me to see what Armenia was like and to experience the culture he had heard so much about. As we planned the trip, I asked him over and over again what he wanted to do while he was here aside from meeting the people that had made my time so special. His one request was to see Mt. Ararat, the biblical mountain where many say Noah’s Ark landed. On the first day, he got his wish and I got this photo.”

“This photo was taken in a marshrutka in Kyrgyzstan. I had no idea who this man was until I sat next to him ready to go to the eastern region of Kyrgyzstan. We sat next to each other for 4 hours talking about his family, where he was from, why I was in Kyrgyzstan, if I liked Kyrgyzstan, and if I had found a Kyrgyz boyfriend yet. At one point during our trip he looked over my shoulder as I was looking through my phone, and he had asked me if I had any photos of my family. I immediately started showing him pictures of my parents, brother, and my house. I think it was his first time seeing how an iPhone worked. This was the kind of man who lived up in the mountains herding his sheep day in and day out. At this point we had become close enough that I thought it would be great if we could get a picture together, so I set the phone up as if ready to take the oh so popular ‘selfie’. So, meet my new friend!”

“I took this photo behind my training host family’s house during the last two weeks of my pre-service training in Cambodia. My seventeen-year-old host brother, Ti, was walking into his family’s rice field on a quiet, dewy morning when I snapped this photo. When I saw him walking away from me into the field, it became symbolic of us parting ways since I was to soon depart for my permanent site. I wondered if he knew how important he had been to me during those past two months of pre-service training because in this moment, I realized that he was one of the most important people to me during that time. As I prepared to leave for permanent site, unsure of what lay ahead, I was certain that Ti had been an amazing example of family and friendship during one of the most important times: a time when I was trying to conceptualize my next two years of life in Cambodia.”
