Did you know that the Peace Corps has a newly discovered species of lizard named after it? Not a Tea Lizard, but a small Andean lizard that Volunteer Grant Adams learned about while farming potatoes with his host family in Peru. If you want to see one for yourself, you could apply for a featured position in Peru. But that’s none of our business.*

Feliz Dia Del Logro! Today after we raced to learn parts of the body in English, we were served traditional plates of sierra food. Normally, students are given a little money to buy unhealthy snacks, so it was nice to share healthy meals together (fruit salad, lentil burgers, guinea pig, juices, quinoa, etc) that were prepared by some of the moms.

Success story
My host sister is two years old so I’ve involved my host Mom in my ‘healthy, strong, and intelligent children’ project. When I first arrived at site, my host sister was just over eight months and slightly under weight and under height for her age but fortunately my host mom was very open and excited to listen to my advice on child development. My host mom and I discuss nutrition and the relationship of protein to proper height. She even reads with my host sister almost every night.
In the high school in my community, a new representative from the Ministry of Education has been working with the fifth grade students. For a few days a month, the representative works with the students on future planning. So her and I have been working together and she occasionally visits with me and my host family.
One day when we were having lunch with my host family, my new friend met my host sister and she thought she was three! She was surprised when my host mom told her she was only two years old. The pride in my host mother’s eyes was unforgettable. My host sister has recovered her weight and height and other people have noticed. My host sister is speaking and running and in great health for her age. She is taller than other kids her age in the community and my host mother is now an example in raising healthy children.
Running for books. The moment the kids learned that the library was real and the books were for them. Moments when I can’t believe I get to be a part of Peace Corps.
