I shared this story on Facebook, but it was
too good not to share again…
We bought a LOT of food for our Emergency
Nutrition Program. (We are now supporting 50 children, all either young and malnourished, or older and on
HIV and/or TB medications.) I wanted to
tell people we are feeding children. But
I realized I did not know the word for “feeding.” The closest I could do was Sidla izingane or
Sipheka izingane – We eat children or We cook children. I have since learned Siphaka izingane – We
serve children.
“We received donations of about 50 new toothbrushes and some toothpaste. So, I decided it would be a great opportunity to teach the kids at one of our primary schools about dental hygiene and keeping their teeth clean. The kids had several different types of toothbrushing techniques including the back-handed holding technique, the applying excessive force technique, the grin-and-bear-your-teeth technique, and the toothpaste everywhere technique. One girl was mimicking me while I was demonstrating how to brush but she didn’t put the toothbrush inside her mouth. Others were eating the toothpaste and then coming back for more.”
“During my Peace Corps service in South Africa I started a small music project at my school. I was able to get a loan of 8 violins to teach 10 learners with provided by an NGO in the province, Limpopo Youth Orchestra. The kids were empowered by music and they love playing the violin. I took this picture of one of my learners on July 20, 2014, while she was introducing the violin to her family. It was an eye-opening experience to the learners, the community, and myself.”
The Interschool Quiz made its debut in 1993. It’s a project of the Western Cape Branch of the South African Institute of International Affairs (SAIIA), designed to boost interest in global matters. This year, 55 schools participated after ten days of reading articles from the Cape Times and special articles from the SAIIA online “Diplomatic Pouch” articles. The winning team earned a cash prize for their school and an invitation to the annual SAIIA Young Leaders Conference. All schools received books for their library.
P.S.: Don’t feel bad if you flame out. An NPR staffer who covers global topics scored a four out of 13.
In South Africa, Volunteers work with their communities on education and health projects. They also get to witness some pretty amazing sunsets! Photo by @PeaceCorps Volunteer Peach Indravudh

Message from Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon: “This year’s commemoration of Nelson Mandela International Day comes at a moment of deep reflection on the life and work of Madiba, as the universally revered leader remains in the hospital.“
