“This photo was taken at the dia de anexión in Costa Rica July 25, 2012. Dia de anexión is a major holiday for this part of Costa Rica. It represents when Guanacaste became part of Costa Rica. This picture depicts the district wide acto civico honoring this day. The acto civico involved the song of Costa Rica and Guanacaste, traditional dancing, and recitations of bombas (funny poems). The photo shows a young elementary student reciting a bomba for the crowd.”
“I took this photo in Armenia 5 June 2007. The photo shows a group of girls preparing to dance for a large group of American tourists, welcoming them to Armenia. Welcoming guests is a special celebration in Armenia. There is music, dancing, and tables of food and drink. I happened to be on vacation that day and by chance came upon this celebration and ended up as a translator between the two cultures.”
“I formed a youth group focused on learning and presenting traditional Afro-Colombian music and dancing styles. A USAID SPA grant through Peace Corps Colombia provided the initial funding for the group to purchase materials and make traditional drums, flutes and other percussion instruments as well as uniforms for two traditional Colombian styles (cumbia and mapalé). In this photo (taken earlier this week) we are presenting a cumbia dance in a neighboring community, our first presentation outside of town. Male dancers (in the forefront of this photo) – dressed in traditional while pants and shirts with red handkerchiefs and sobrero vueltiao hats – bow toward audience members while female dancers in the back carry candles and wave their flowing skirts.”
“This photo was taken on September 1st, 2012 in Chornomorka, Ukraine at Chornomorka Comprehensive School. It is tradition for a male in the soon-to-be-graduating class to carry a girl from the year’s incoming 1st form class on his shoulder as she rings the bell to signal the start of the new school year.”
